Assessment of Learner Achievement
During the lesson, I monitored student achievement in several ways. I first monitored their progress on the game by walking around and provided assistance as needed. I was also able to assess their understanding by comparing their answers from the pre and post reflections. Prior to reviewing the analogy mapping activity as a whole group, I did take time to look at student’s answers and have an idea of what their thinking was. It allowed me to know where I needed to focus more review and where I could save time.
Evaluation of Strategies and Resource
The students really enjoyed the game component of the lesson, so much that they were begging me to play it even after we moved to the next unit. However, I realized they struggled to make the connection between the game and the concept of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In fact, they were not able to make the connection until the analogy mapping activity, where the questions required them to actually think about the gameplay and how it related to the subject. In the future, I will make this activity be one of the first assignments students are to complete. I believe I will give the pre-reflection first, then allow for gameplay, next analogy mapping, and finish with the post-reflection. That will allow me to have a better idea of what my students obtained as far as the objectives are concerned.
