All phases of the ASSURE Model are critical, however, the first phase that teachers need to pay particular attention too when integrating game-based learning is the first phase, analysis of the learners. During this phase, there are several factors that help determine the lesson's method, media, and materials. These factors include, but are not limited to: (1) general characteristics such as age, grade level, and cultural or socioeconomic status. (2) Specific Entry Competencies such as the learners’ knowledge and skills they either possess or lack. Within this factor, the teacher may give a pre-assessment or some type of pre-requisite to determine the students’ knowledge. (3) Learning Styles is probably the most crucial within this phase because it helps determine if the method and/or is an effective learning resource for the learner(s). Most classrooms consist of various learning styles; therefore, it is the teacher’s job to design a lesson to enhance each aspect of these intelligences.
The next phase teachers need to pay particular attention too when integrating game-based learning is the third phase, the selection of method, media, and materials. Within this phase the teacher is able to decide how they are going to present, teach, and assess the standard. They decide what materials to use in order to meet their objectives. Teachers also need to determine if they need to involve additional resources, such as the media specialist or technology specialist, this will require scheduling ahead of time with these particular individuals at their school. It is important within this phase that teachers preview all media and materials to ensure they are working properly as well as accomplishing the goal(s) they have for their students.
The last phase teachers need to pay particular attention too when integrating game-based learning is the sixth phase, evaluation and revision. This phase is misleading because of its placement in the model, according to the model it would be done last, however, this needs to be done throughout the entire unit. Teachers constantly evaluate and revise during units anyways, whether they realize or not, informally and formally to determine the growth and effective learning of their students. Teachers also evaluate the effectiveness of the media and materials within an instructional unit once its completed, however, rarely do they make revisions. This is due to the lack of time given before moving to the next unit. Instead, teachers will put everything away with the idea they will change it next year and end up forgetting about what revisions need to be made the following year.
